Leaving The Loser Behind

I’m sitting there on December 26, meditating in my bedroom, when I have an interesting thought:  For most of my life, I employed all kinds of tricks to get people to like me, to not reject me.  I had a whole arsenal of clever manipulations.  I pick up my journal and start writing this stuff down; it could be good stuff.… Read more

Who Am I This December?

BigPic6

Someone’s singing and I think it’s me. Someone’s living and oh gosh it’s me. — Donovan, “Someone Singing”

This is the season of Jesus, or so we say when we think he might be eavesdropping.  But sometimes it seems like the season of how much stuff do I need to give in order to stay consistent with my image of myself as a generous and loving person.  Mind you, I’m not pointing any fingers.  Let me tell you a story of the inner workings of a mind …

Three Decembers ago Jim and I welcomed into our home a young couple (and their two cats) who were living in their broken down van.  The young man wasn’t a stranger; he was the son of a good friend of Jim who now lives in Virginia; he’d last seen this son as a boy.… Read more

Turning 67 and Throwing Out The Rules

IMG_7706

My first day of being 67. All systems go!

Here are two competing points of view on aging: 1. “There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be,” said John Lennon in “All You Need Is Love.”

2. “How could you have been so careless as to allow yourself to get old?” said Richard Powers about our society’s attitude toward its aging citizens in his novel Orfeo.Read more

Everyday Magic, Part 3: Love as a Spiritual Power

image003

The power of love is its ability to transcend fear.

We seem to be laboring under a misunderstanding about what love really is.  How many of us, let’s be truthful, find that when the subject turns to love, our minds go right to greeting cards and dating rituals?  In other words, we’ve been conditioned to equate the idea of love with a societally ingrained notion of romance, whatever that may mean to us.  What if I were to say that love is actually a power, the power behind the very vitality that we rely on to drive our every interaction with life?  Then Leonard Cohen’s line, “Love’s the only engine of survival” could be understood in a deeper way.… Read more

Everyday Magic, Pt. 2: The Powers of Co-Creativity & Imagination

image005

We trust that there is a higher purpose animating our creative impulses.

What is co-creativity, and how is it related to the imagination?  If both of these are “powers,” then how can we tap into them to make our lives work better?  Let’s face it, that’s what we all want now, isn’t it?  If modern life offers no certainties, then where do we turn for inspiration to get us through these trying times?… Read more

Meditation De-Mystified

In the last few days I’ve found myself addressing basic questions about meditation on  Facebook. So many either don’t know where to start, or have tried it and had difficulty. My own first-hand experience began in August of 1973 in Cleveland, Ohio, when I sat down to meditate for 20 minutes.

It was simple; at some point I even lost track of time.… Read more

Everyday Magic, Part 1: The Power of Intention

Life is meant to be magical, but we’ve drained it of its magical properties through our stubborn allegiance to logic.

Priorities shift. Deeper desires float to the surface.

Priorities shift. Deeper desires float to the surface.

Einstein said that the intuitive mind is meant to be a sacred gift; the rational mind a faithful servant. Instead, we’ve created Topsy-Turvy World, where we delegate all our decision-making to the myopic servant, while scorning our sacred powers.  An error in judgment for which this world is now paying dearly.… Read more

The Unreasonableness of Reason

IMG_1688

Accept the power of your imagination to create your reality.

I always lived my life as though rational thought would save me, no matter how bad the situation, how emotional the pain.  Looking back, I see that reason never saved me; quite the opposite.  Oh, it may have looked like I “fixed” a problem, but I had only kicked it down the road.  In fact, “figuring things out” through so-called rational thinking was the real problem.… Read more

Creating Peace of Mind Through Purifying Our Thoughts

IMG_0372

I need to trust more radically
To get to where I wanna be.

As the planetary rate of change spins us around like a top all day long, we are being called by our rapidly evolving mother, the earth, to spend time purifying our thoughts.  In this way we tap into an incorruptible vibrational field- the quantum field-around us, and we are able to stabilize in the midst of chaos.  Yoga alone can’t keep us centered.  Neither will just meditating daily; I know, I practiced Transcendental Meditation for eighteen years, and it wasn’t enough.… Read more

Finding Your Purpose Pt. 2: Trust and Allow

We are suffering from the end stage of terminal rationalism, the poor man’s compassion.   Looking at the devastation of the latest war, we IMG_6774say, “We need to bring more reason to the table.”  Every time I hear such a statement I substitute the word “compassion” for  “reason.”  Try it sometime.  Do we need more compassion or more reason to find the inner peace that attracts a higher purpose, for ourselves and for humanity as a whole?… Read more
